Pritzker expected to sign sweeping energy legislation some say increases costs

SPRINGFIELD, IL — Illinois has new energy bill and plan to “green” the electricity used in the state over the coming decades. The Senate approved – with Democrat and Republican votes – a bill that would send hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to nuclear plants in northern Illinois and possibly close coal plants by 2045 in downstate Illinois.

State Senator Terri Bryant says what it doesn’t cover and should, are benefits for southern Illinois. She says instead, the largest electric rate increase in state history will hurt downstate Illinois’ economy.

Governor J.B. Pritzker said the measure, which he is expected to sign promptly, will create jobs.

Senate Bill 2408 was approved on a vote of 37 to 17.
