BROWNSTOWN, IL — The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Tuesday morning shooting in rural Brownstown. Reports indicate a man became involved in a standoff with authorities before reportedly shooting himself. The man, whose name is not available, was airlifted for treatment of his injuries.

Because the incident was in close proximity to Brownstown schools, the district went on a “soft lockdown” status, which was later lifted. Superintendent Mike Shackelford said the schools were never involved in the incident. Fayette County Sheriff Chris Palmer says at no time whatsoever were any students, staff, or members of the community in danger.

Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by the Brownstown Fire Department, Rural Med EMS, St. Elmo Police Department, Vandalia Police Department and the Illinois State Police Division of Crime Scene Services.
