MT. VERNON, IL — Two juveniles were taken into custody Saturday afternoon after reports of shots fired in Mt. Vernon.
Police Department officers responded around 2:30pm to an area in the 1000 block of South 25th and determined two subjects had been in the area and one had fired multiple shots from a handgun after a dispute. Officers were able to locate witnesses to the incident and develop information regarding the suspects. Those officers along with Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies continued the investigation and responded to a residence in the 4100 block of Willow Springs. At the residence officers conducted a search for the suspects and observed evidence indicating someone had entered the attic of the residence. After approximately 45 minutes of requesting the suspects exit the attic, the officers made entry to the attic area and located the two suspects hiding inside. Both a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old juvenile were taken into custody without incident. Officers also located a handgun in the attic.
The 16-year-old arrested on charges of Armed Violence, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm Under the Age of 21. The 15-year-old was  taken into custody on a Jefferson County petition to revoke probation warrant
Both juveniles were transported to the Franklin County Juvenile Justice Center pending a court date in Jefferson County. No one was injured during the incident.
