MURPHYSBORO, IL — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous reports of theft of mail from residential mailboxes along the roadway, particularly in the rural areas of the county west of Murphysboro.

It is believed these thefts are happening in the early morning hours and the perpetrators are driving from mailbox to mailbox removing the contents. In order to reduce these thefts, it is recommended residents secure their mail from their mailbox as soon as they reasonably can after it is delivered.

If you believe you are the victim of a mail theft, or if any suspicious vehicles or persons are witnessed tampering with mailboxes, you are encouraged to report the information to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at 684-2177.
