MT. VERNON, IL — If you’ve driven through Mt. Vernon at all in the past few days you probably noticed some changes to the traffic signals along Broadway/Route 15. The Illinois Department of Transportation has upgraded signal lights to provide a safer and more efficient left turns at 6 intersections stretching from 27th street to 44th street.

Public Works Field Supervisor Stephen Talley says the main, new feature most will notice is the flashing yellow turn light.

The “GREEN” left turn arrow will now be displayed if the demand is still present after a set number of seconds. Talley along with Public Works Director Matt Fauss says the new lights should reduce unnecessary delays in lower traffic volumes.
