BENTON, IL — Two people were injured in an early Friday morning crash in Franklin County.

According to Illinois State Police, around 12:40a.m., 33-year-old Kirk Wilson of St. Louis was traveling south in his truck on I-57 near milepost 72 in Benton as a semi with trailer, driven by 46-year-old James Grimes of Laredo, Texas, was traveling north at the same location. Wilson left the roadway, crossing the center median and rolling over numerous times ejecting him. Wilson then struck Grimes head-on.

Grimes was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with minor injuries. Wilson was flown to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries. Wilson was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Improper Lane Usage, Failure to Wear Seatbelt by Driver, Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle and Operating a Vehicle with Expired Registration.

ISP says the crash remains under investigation. The northbound lanes of I-57 were closed for 3.5 hours during the crash investigation.
