MT. VERNON, IL — The Jefferson County Historical Village and Schweinfurth Museum are opening for their 30th season on Saturday May 8th.
The Village and Museum, with the buildings and contents, reflect life from the beginning of Jefferson County. Among the furnished buildings, you will find log homes from the 19th century, a log church, Mt. Vernon’s first jail, a one-room schoolhouse, a functioning blacksmith shop, an operational newspaper printing shop, a general store full of period merchandise, a medical building, and other outbuildings. There are also trails for enjoying a nature stroll.
The SchweinfurthMuseum will feature an exhibit called “Banks and Money”. The exhibit highlights the history of banking in Jefferson County. The many changes in currency are on display. Also featured is a short snorter, a bank note inscribed by those traveling together on an aircraft during WWII. A collection of French coins from WWII can also be viewed. Stories about the depression, and even bank robberies are also displayed.
All buildings will be open to tour on Saturdays from 12-4pm and Sunday’s from1-4pm. The Museum will also be open on weekdays from 12:30pm till 4:30pm. There is no charge to tour and everyone is welcome.
