CENTRALIA, IL — An arson investigation is underway following a fire Saturday morning at a Centralia home. The City of Centralia had taken possession of the home Friday morning in the 900 block of South Marion as part of the process of condemning the residence.

But when firefighters arrived around 8:30 Saturday morning, Brittany Elliston was standing on the porch of the home where she had apparently been living despite the condemnation process. Elliston was taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia for treatment of minor smoke inhalation.

The home had reportedly been damaged in multiple previous fires. Saturday’s fire was confined to one bedroom. Firefighters say some type of firebomb had been thrown into the home, leading them to call the fire an “obvious” arson. Investigators reportedly have developed a suspect who may have been upset with Elliston.

All available shifts of Centralia City firefighters were called in to help fight the blaze. They reported a quick knockdown.
