CENTRALIA, IL — A 58-year-old Centralia man was injured Saturday night around 8:15pm when he was struck by an Amtrak train slowing to make a stop at the Centralia depot.

Centralia City firefighters reportedly found Larry Sligar with an apparent broken arm and heady injury after he was clipped by the train at the Broadway crossing. The impact is said to have thrown Sligar about 20 feet before he hit the ground. He was transported by Lifestar Ambulance to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of his injuries. According to Centralia police, Sligar said he was trying to beat the train across the crossing.

The incident delayed the northbound train about 20 minutes.
