MT. VERNON, IL — While responding to a call just after 9pm of a two-vehicle accident in the 600 block of South 19th Tuesday, the Mt. Vernon Police Department received additional dispatch reports of at least one person on scene armed with a handgun
Officers arrived on scene and began an investigation and found that initial reports from the scene on how the accident occurred contradicted each other. Dispatchers began reviewing city surveillance camera footage and a witness reported observing one of the subjects, later identified as 19-year-old Termaine Wright of Mt. Vernon, discarding a firearm. Dispatchers, upon further review of the city’s video cameras, confirmed the witness information allowing law enforcement to locate a loaded handgun under the porch of a residence in the area.
Wright was taken into custody on charges of Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapon and Possession of a Firearm without a FOID Card. Wright is currently incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center with bond to be set in court.
