JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL — A rural Opdyke home was destroyed by fire Monday night. According to the Jefferson County Fire Protection District, they responded around 10:30 Monday night to a mobile home fire in the 19-thousand block of East Bakerville Road.

The resident was able to get out of the home safely but upon their arrival, firefighters found the home was fully engulfed in flames. Extremely cold temperatures hampered firefighters efforts in fighting the fire, as the fire hydrant closest to the home was frozen and road conditions made reaching the location difficult.

A cause for the blaze is unknown and the State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate. Firefighters remained on scene for more than three hours. Firefighters from JFPD received mutual aid assistance at the scene from Mt. Vernon City firefighters, as well as Bluford and Waltonville, firefighters. Woodlawn and Benton firefighters were on standby at the Jefferson Fire Protection District firehouse.
