CENTRALIA, IL — Illinois State Police responded around 9:30 Tuesday morning to a multiple-vehicle crash on Interstate 57 in a single-lane construction zone north of Mt. Vernon.

According to ISP, a vehicle spun out in the roadway and a semi stopped to avoid hitting it. While stopped, the semi was rear ended by another semi, which was subsequently rear ended by another semi.

The second crash occurred at the same location when a passenger vehicle stopped to avoid the first crash and was rear ended by a second vehicle, which was then rear ended by a third vehicle.

No injuries were reported with either crash. The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours during the crash investigation.

ISP urges motorists to slow down and allow extra time for travel today as many roads remain snow covered and hazardous.
