SALEM, IL — Salem Mayor Sue Morgan passed away Saturday morning at Memorial Hospital in East Shiloh. Morgan had been ill in recent months and not been attending any Salem City Council meetings. Mayor Pro Tem Nic Farley had been presiding over the meetings in her absence. He will continue to serve in that role through the upcoming consolidated election in April.

Morgan retired from the Salem Grade School District before being elected to the Salem City Council. She was then appointed Mayor in 2019 following the resignation of Rex Barbee who left the seat to become Salem City Manager. At the time of her appointment she noted she would not seek election to the seat when the term expires in 2021. Farley is seeking election to the seat as is Brock Waggoner.

Funeral services for the 71-year-old Morgan are pending at the Crouse Funeral Home in Salem.
