Evelyn Joyce Powers, age 80, died Saturday, January 30, 2021. Evelyn was born in Kuttawa, Kentucky on September 29, 1940 to Leeper and Isabelle Lamb. She married Karl M. Powers on August 11, 1963 at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Tiffany Ford and husband, Kevin and Amanda “Luci” Welling both of Mount Vernon; son, Timothy Powers of Texico, Illinois; grandchildren, Blake Ford of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Brittany Welling of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Jake Powers and Paige Powers and their mother, Angie Powers of Texico, Illinois; step-granddaughters, Charissa Ng of Macau, China and Karita Ford of Quantico, Virginia; great-granddaughter, Brynlee Sanders of Mount Vernon; sisters, Dorothy Bingham and husband, Russell of Kuttawa, Kentucky, Marolyn Gibson of Louisville, Kentucky, Barbara Stephenson of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Sharon Pratt of Brentwood, Tennessee, Linda Jo Lamb of Nashville, Tennessee; brothers, Bob Lamb and wife, Barbara of Brentwood, Tennessee, Mike Lamb of Mount Juliet, Tennessee; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Wanda and Chuck Cohoon of Marion, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Karl Powers; parents, Leeper and Isabelle Lamb; brothers, Charles Lamb and Jerry Lamb; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Murrel Rickman; brothers-in-law, Ray Pratt and Dale Gibson; parents-in-law, J. Marvin and Lucille Powers; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jean and Thomas “Pookey” Pentecost.

Evelyn graduated from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky with a Bachelor’s Degree in secondary education in 1960 and taught journalism in Marion, Illinois before moving to Mount Vernon, Illinois to teach journalism, English and American Literature at Mount Vernon Township High School. She later attended Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois, obtaining a Master’s Degree in counseling and transitioned from teaching to serving as a guidance counselor at the high school from 1980 until her retirement in 1995. She subsequently returned to work for a few years as an interim and substitute counselor as needed at Waltonville High School. She was President of the Illinois Education Association.

Evelyn belonged to a bridge club and enjoyed playing with her husband and three other couples who remained life long friends. She took a myriad of classes including macrame, ceramics, and cake decorating and enjoyed making homemade cakes for family birthdays.

Evelyn spent the remainder of her retirement traveling, reading voraciously, decorating her home, and spending as much time as possible doting on her grandchildren. She loved to take them on vacations and spoil them with gifts. She also spent several years as a loving and faithful caregiver to her husband, Karl, after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Visitation will be held Saturday, February 6, 2021 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Reverend Merle Fullerton officiating. Interment will follow at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Memorials may be made in Evelyn’s honor to St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
