Wilda Mae Sumner

Wilda Mae Sumner

Wilda Mae Sumner, 101, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 4:15 am January 23, 2021 at Heritage Center in Evansville, Indiana. She was born July 20, 1919 in Jefferson County, Illinois to the late Francis and Ina (Sammons) Green. Mae married Ray Sumner on October 9, 1937. They were blessed with 42 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on January 16, 1980.

Mae is survived by her son, Robert F. Sumner and wife, Linda of Evansville, Indiana; grandchildren, Stephanie Hutt and husband, Ryan of Story, Wyoming, Stacie McDonald and husband, Chris of Gillette, Wyoming, and Scott Sumner, Stuart Sumner, and Amy Sumner, all of Evansville, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Grace McDonald, Finn McDonald, Madigan Hutt, and Mick Hutt; sister-in-law, Helen Sumner of Spokane, Washington; nieces, Jackie Hayes of Florissant, Missouri and Beverly Mullinax and husband, Don of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and several other nieces and nephews that she adored.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mae was preceded in death by her son, Michael R. Sumner and wife, Sandy of Gillette, Wyoming; grandson, Jason Sumner; great-granddaughter, Amanda Fedderson; brothers, Angus Green and Amos Green; and sister, Bertha Shields.

Mae was a homemaker most of her married life. Her home was always the gathering place for friends and family to crowd around the kitchen table. Her spunky personality drew you in and she never met a stranger. She enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, and spending time with her friends and family. Mae will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Mae was a faithful member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois.  She was also a member of the Eastern Star of Belle Rive, Home Extension of Mount Vernon, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Center for the love, respect, and care they provided for Mae.

A small private family only visitation will be held Tuesday, January 26, 2021 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Chapel in Woodlawn, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Reverend Bud Storey officiating. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Mae’s honor to the Epworth United Methodist Church.

The funeral service will be available for the public to view via Zoom. Please go to zoom.us/join and enter the meeting ID: 846 4125 2978 to join the meeting.

Due to the pandemic and since we can’t all be together, the family asks that you remember Mae by taking a drive in the country, go for a walk by the riverfront, or surround yourself with good company at your favorite restaurant. Simple things like these she enjoyed the most.
