FLORA, IL — Bail was set at $500,000 Monday in Clay County Court for a 40-year-old Flora man charged with attempted murder in connection with the stabbings of multiple people early Sunday morning at a Flora hotel.

According to the Clay County State’s Attorney’s Office, Shane Highsmith was formally charged with Class X felony attempted murder and three Class 3 felonies for two counts aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Highsmith is accused of stabbing the alleged victims inside one of the hotel rooms and out in the parking lot. Flora police responded around 2am Sunday morning to a call of a fight in progress at the hotel.   Authorities report the victims are in stable condition and Highsmith is the only suspect in the case.

Highsmith is next scheduled to appear in court January 6th, for a preliminary hearing and a first appearance with his court appointed attorney.
