MT. VERNON, IL — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded just after 3 o’clock Monday morning to a call of a vehicle being stolen from a residence in the 900 block of George Street where a second vehicle was identified as a possible accomplice.

A few minutes later, deputies located both vehicles with the second vehicle described as a purple Toyota Camry and a pursuit quickly ensued. The chase reportedly reached speeds in excess of 80 mph on Broadway in Mt. Vernon before entering northbound Interstate 57 and then onto westbound Interstate 64. Speeds were then reported to exceed 100 mph on I-64 as the Camry was apparently attempting to block law enforcement from following the stolen vehicle.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office deployed stop-sticks on I-64 and were able to stop the stolen vehicle where the suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot and the pursuit of the Camry continued.
