SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (WITHERS BROADCASTING/DANA COMM.) — The Illinois State Police reported multiple crashes over the weekend.

The first crash involved a single vehicle traveling on Big Barn Road southeast of Mouth Road in Gallatin County around 8pm Saturday. 40-year-old Christopher Smith of Shawneetown lost control of the ATV he was driving and overturned. Smith was taken to a local hospital with injuries and cited for Driving on a Revoked License, Improper Lane Usage, Driving too fast for conditions, and Improper Operation of a non-highway vehicle.

Three more crashes occurred Sunday.

At 6:23am 23-year-old Abel Bautista Sanchez of Marion was westbound on Interstate 64 near the off-ramp at Skeeter Mountain Rest Area in White County when he failed to negotiate a turn. Sanchez’s vehicle traveled off the roadway to the left, slid down an embankment and struck a tree. The vehicle then spun around backwards and slid into a concrete culvert with its rear end. Three passengers were in the vehicle 18-year-old Cesar Bautista, a 14-year-old juvenile female, and 20-year-old Pedro Bautista all of Marion. Pedro was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver was issued a citation for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.

Meanwhile at 6:28am Sunday near the West Frankfort exit off I-57, a two-vehicle crash occurred. 23-year-old Lewis Leron Jr. of Mobile, AL was stopped on the outside, southbound shoulder on the interstate north of the Route 149 exit. However, Leron Jr. was partially blocking the outside lane. A second vehicle driven by 43-year-old Eric Campbell Sr. of Anthony, FL approached the hill crest where Leron was parked and struck his parked vehicle. Leron was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries and cited for Improper Parking on a Roadway. A passenger in his vehicle, 25-year-old Brandon Moffett of Mobile, AL was also taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Finally, at 8:34pm an ambulance vs. truck crash occurred at the intersection of U.S. Route 45 and IL Route 142 in Eldorado. 25-year-old Brian T. Skinner of Christopher was driving the ambulance north on U.S. 45 approaching the intersection with light and sirens activated. 44-year-old Brian K. Baird of Harrisburg was southbound on rt. 142 and had the green light to proceed through the intersection. Skinner failed to yield at the red light and was struck by Baird’s vehicle. He was issued a citation for Failure to Yield at a Stop Intersection.
