CARBONDALE, IL — A train crash was reported in Carbondale Wednesday night.

According to Carbondale Police, around 10:50 p.m. officers responded to the railroad crossing on Main Street. Officers learned a driver mistakenly drove a passenger vehicle onto the railroad tracks, turning north from Main Street and became stuck. Officers contacted the Canadian National Railroad of the situation and moved the driver to a safe location. Officers tried unsuccessfully to move the vehicle off of the tracks with the help of a tow truck.

A short time later, a northbound Canadian National train struck the vehicle because it did not have time to stop, causing significant damage to the vehicle. The Canadian National Railroad closed the railroad crossings for one hour. There were no injuries reported during the incident.

The Carbondale Fire Department and Jackson County Ambulance Service were also on scene to provide assistance.
