JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL — Fire crews spent two hours early Sunday morning battling fires in corn and bean fields and dealing with a burning SUV.

According to the Jefferson Fire Protection District a 911 call came in around 3:40 a.m. regarding those fires and a man was found sitting on a nearby porch after he was involved in a car crash.

Fire crews found an SUV on fire in the middle of a bean field. Those flames had burned about one acre of crops.

1/8 of a mile away there was also a fire in a corn field.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened, but they believe the man in the SUV swerved to avoid hitting a deer and ended up crashing into farm equipment in one of those fields.

The gear then got stuck in reverse and the man jumped from the vehicle and it rolled into the second field and caught fire.
