MT. VERNON, IL — The YMCA of Jefferson County will open its new facility at 2424 Broadway during a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:30am on November 2nd.  CEO Cheryl Settle with the Y says they’ve been waiting since the First Presbyterian Church location was purchased in February.

Major gifts for the project were obtained in 2014 when the YMCA initiated a capital campaign, and several new donors have come forward since the building was purchased.

Settle says if this isn’t the Y’s permanent home, it certainly is a step in that direction.

Through a generous gift from the Schweinfurth Foundation, land at the rear of the property is currently being prepared for soccer fields expected to open in 2022.

The facility will open to members beginning at 5am on November 2nd and tours will be available. Hours at the new location will be Monday to Friday from 5am-8pm and Saturdays from 7am-5pm.  Free Child Watch will be available weekdays from 8:30-11:30am and 5-8pm.

The YMCA is moving from its current facility located at 1304 Broadway where it has operated since 2004.The organization was chartered 55 years ago in 1965; however its roots go back as early as 1947 with a first meeting called by Harold Howard and Silas Echols.  Bylaws were adopted in 1957 thanks to the efforts of Demetri Hassakis.  During its more than 55 years in Mount Vernon, the YMCA has been located in the old Washington School, several downtown store fronts, Lincoln School, and its current location.

The YMCA will continue its mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.  YMCA programs strive to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. You can call 242-7500 if you have any questions about the current Y or the new location.
