PERRY/WASHINGTON COUNTIES, IL — A 43-year-old Centralia man was sentenced Friday in Washington and Perry counties to 20 years in prison for shooting at police in a multi-county pursuit in 2018.
Nathan Johnson had entered an open plea of guilty in August to a combined agreement with both Perry and Washington counties. He was sentenced Friday to 20 years for Class X felony aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer and three years each on three Class 4 felony counts of aggravated assault in pointing a laser device at law enforcement.
Johnson was accused of taking police in DuQuoin on a pursuit through Perry County and into Washington County in August of 2018 where he reportedly fired multiple shots at officers during the chase. The pursuit ended at Johnson’s rural Centralia home on Irvington Road where he reportedly continued firing at police during an hours-long standoff, ultimately striking a Centralia officer’s squad car.
The sentences will be served concurrently but Johnson will have to serve 85% of the 20 year term before being eligible for parole.
