CENTRALIA — Centralia High School students will return from the Labor Day weekend to full-remote learning until September 21, after a student tested positive Thursday for COVID-19.

This is the second positive test for coronavirus at the school after a faculty member tested positive last Friday.

Since the two cases were within 14 days of each other, standards from the Illinois Department of Public Health consider it an outbreak.

The student and faculty member did not have contact with one another and the student had not been in class since last Friday. Health officials consider the student’s case a result of community spread and contact tracing is ongoing.

While the Clinton County Health Department had cleared the teacher to return to work Tuesday, two other teachers who were close contacts of that person have been placed in quarantine.

The existing schedule had Friday as a full remote day and students would be attending classes through the Chromebooks the school had distributed to them.

Breakfast and lunch will be distributed to all students during the two weeks of remote learning much like was done during remote learning in the spring. A list of bus stops and drop off points will be released sometime on Friday.

For students who do not have reliable internet at home, plans are being developed for those students to be allowed to go to the school and use their Chromebooks to complete their assignments.

Those students would continue to be checked each day for a temperature and COVID symptoms. They will be required to sit six feet apart and wear a mask.
