MT. VERNON, IL — The P.O. boxes are being installed and construction of a new parking lot is just about all that’s left for completion of the new Mt. Vernon Post Office at the corner of 10th and Jordan.

Once the post office is moved, the redevelopment project at the former Park Plaza can begin. Mt. Vernon Mayor John Lewis says the project features Milano Metals building a trans-loading site on the grounds where Park Plaza currently stands.

Brian Edmison was the architect on the post office project. He says the inspiration was to keep the design consistent with the look and feel of the rest of downtown.

Mt. Vernon City Councilman Joe Gliosci says it was a long journey to get to the September 14th opening date, but he’s excited for the citizens to utilize the new location.

The 6,200 square foot facility will cost the city $895,000 and feature a 24-hour PO Box access as well as a drop box area.
