MT. VERNON, IL — The United Way of South Central Illinois was honored during the month of August with the Southern Illinois Hometown Hero award from Congressman Mike Bost. The nonprofit organization received the award in part for the nearly 684,000 pounds of produce and dairy they’ve given away since May 28th through the Farmers to Family program.

Executive Director Nat Wellen says they are just honored to be mentioned alongside all the other heroes of this pandemic.

Wellen says UWSCI has partnered with Cusumano & Sons Inc. once again, but this week to provide disinfectant wipes to schools in the community. UWSCI will also be handing out boxes of food at hospitals in Washington County, Salem, Fairfield, McLeansboro, Mt. Carmel, and Franklin County.
