SOUTHERN ILLINOIS — According to a recent Nielsen report, alcohol sales have seen a sharp increase since the pandemic began. In March and April, alcohol sales in store grew about 20% per week compared to 2019, and online sales grew dramatically. But a local mental health professional is warning residents that alcohol is not a permanent fix for easing stress.

Christine Raben is a licensed clinical social worker with Ferrell Hospital. She says higher alcohol consumption can make your anxious feelings even worse over time.

Raben says while there are many things we can do to decrease stress, if you need help, don’t be afraid to seek help.
