MT. VERNON, IL — A 25-year-old Centralia man was arrested by Mt. Vernon Police Thursday during a well-being check on a vehicle sitting on the southbound off ramp of I-57 at Broadway. Asante Poore was arrested for Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Possession of Ammunition without a FOID Card, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine), and Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.
The first officer on scene approached the vehicle to make contact with Poore, he observed a handgun located in Poore’s lap. The officer returned to a position of cover and requested additional units. Other Mt Vernon Police Department officers along with Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene.
Over a period of approximately 23 minutes the officers attempted to call Poore from the vehicle with no response. The officers were able to place stop sticks around the vehicles tires and block the vehicle with squads to prevent him fleeing.
After receiving no response from Poore, officers approached the vehicle and busted out the driver’s window and he was able to be removed from the vehicle without further incident. The firearm was found to be loaded.
Poore was incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center with bond to be set.
