ILLINOIS — There will be fall high school sports in 2020, just not as many of them as year’s past.

The IHSA Board of Directors approved a modified schedule that moves multiple sports back in the 2020-2021 school year. State series tournament decisions will be made on a sport-by-sport basis and competition must follow the guidelines set out today by governor J.B. Pritzker.

When asked why sports like baseball and softball couldn’t be moved to the fall, IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson says the board was trying to not overlap any sports that don’t normally overlap in season.

Boys and girls golf, girls tennis, boys and girls cross country, and girls swimming and diving are the only IHSA sports that will proceed as planned this fall. All winter sports will proceed during the winter season. Football, boys soccer, and girls volleyball will go in the spring season with girls badminton, boys gymnastics, and boys and girls water polo. A new summer season will include many spring sports pushed back, including baseball, softball, boys and girls track and field, girls soccer, boys volleyball, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys tennis.
