CLINTON COUNTY, IL — A 28-year-old Centralia man was arrested last week in Madison County on an outstanding Clinton County warrant charging him in connection with allegedly shooting at his brother.

Cody Matson was wanted on a $100,000 warrant charging him with being an armed habitual criminal – a Class X felony, two Class 1 felony counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle, three Class 2 felony counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm with a prior conviction, and misdemeanor aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Matson is accused of firing shots the morning of June 24 into a vehicle occupied by his 24-year-old brother Matthew Woods and firing shots at Woods as he exited the vehicle and fled into a home in the 100 block of Clinmar Boulevard.

According to Centralia Police Chief Greg Dodson, earlier in the morning of June 24, officers responded to a report of a shooting at Matson’s residence. However, upon their arrival, officers were unable to locate anyone in the area but did locate several shell casings and a vehicle damaged by gunfire. They later determined the two shootings were related and were able to obtain a video showing a subject identified as Matson pulling into a rear driveway of the Clinmar residence, exiting the vehicle, shooting at Woods, also of Centralia, and then firing into an occupied vehicle that Woods had exited during the shooting.

Matson was transferred late last week from the Madison County Jail to the Clinton County Jail where he remains. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Wednesday, with Matson indicating he would hire private counsel.
