JEFFERSON COUNTY — Multiple fire departments responded Saturday morning to a fire that destroyed a home in the 15-thousand block of East Fairfield Road near the Mt. Vernon Outland Airport.

According to the Jefferson Fire Protection District, no one was at home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

The fire in the two-story home was reported around 5:45 a.m. Saturday when a neighbor noticed the fire in the carport area. Before firefighters arrived at the home, the blaze had already spread to the home.

Firefighters from Mt. Vernon City, Bluford, Kell, Waltonville and Woodlawn all responded to the scene, while firefighters from the Centralia Fire Protection District and West City covered the Jefferson Fire Protection District stations in case of another fire.

The State Fire Marshal’s office was called to investigate the cause of the fire.

A backhoe was eventually brought in to knock down the remaining walls to assist firefighters in completely dousing the blaze.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 12:30 Saturday afternoon.
