MT. VERNON — The minimum wage in the state of Illinois is now $10 an hour. The change goes into effect today as a part of the legislation passed to make Illinois’ minimum wage $15 an hour by 2025. Like small businesses, local governments have to adjust to the pay raise.

Mt. Vernon City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel says the pay raise currently affects the city the most at the Aquatic Zoo.

Bechtel says the city will be trying to do what all businesses will do with the gradual wage increase.

The minimum wage will increase to $11 an hour on January 1st, 2021, and will increase by $1 an hour each year until hitting $15 an hour on January 1st, 2025.
