ROYALTON, IL — A chase involving Cambria Police and a stolen vehicle ended with the driver of the stolen vehicle crashing into another vehicle pulling a trailer with a piece of farm equipment attached to it on Elkville Blacktop at Illinois 149 shortly before 2 Wednesday afternoon.

According to Illinois State Police, a Cambria police officer attempted to stop 26-year-old Derverz J. Thomas of Marion who was driving a stolen 2016 Jeep Wrangler from Carbondale northbound on Illinois 149 just south of Elkville Blacktop. Thomas failed to stop for the officer. Another vehicle, a 2005 Ford F350 pulling a farm trailer with a combine head attached, driven by 38-year-old John W. Chamness, Jr. of Royalton, was stopped on Elkville Blacktop eastbound at the intersection of Illinois 149.

Thomas failed to maneuver a curve and left the roadway. His vehicle traveled across a grassy field before striking an embankment. The vehicle became airborne and struck Chamness’ trailer. Thomas’ vehicle and the combine head came to rest in a grassy area on the north side of Elkville Blacktop Road.

Thomas suffered non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to an area hospital. Chamness refused medical attention.

ISP continues to investigate the incident. Criminal charges are pending.
