Mt. Vernon man pronounced dead after he was hit while riding bike on Route 148

WALTONVILLE, IL — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says 48-year-old Heath Hughey of Mt. Vernon was killed while riding his bike on Route 148 near Waltonville Tuesday morning.

A pick-up truck driven by Sesser resident Kaleb Flood (26) was attempting to pass Hughey and as another vehicle approached, Flood was force to swerved back into the eastbound lane hitting the bicycle.

Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse pronounced Hughey dead on scene while Flood was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
