As buildings start to reopen, businesses, school districts and property management teams will begin the process of restarting building systems that have been dormant for a significant amount of time.
Illinois American Water Company is sharing guidance to help get the water flowing again, making sure your plumbing is in safe working order. Company spokesman Karen Cotton says flushing your system is important from both a health and mechanical point of view.
While every situation is different, the company guidelines include flushing each toilet at least twice, running both hot and cold water at full flow for at least 2 minutes in showers and sinks. Cotton says to also follow manufacturer’s instructions to replace water filters after completion of flushing of appliances like ice-making refrigerators.
