American Rivers names upper Mississippi as most endangered river on top 10 list

ILLINOIS (WITHERS BROADCASTING/WMIX) — American Rivers is an organization whose goal is to protect wild rivers, restore damaged rivers and conserve clean water for people and nature. On Tuesday they named the upper Mississippi river as America’s most endangered river of 2020 in their top 10 list.

In a Press Release, American Rivers cited a combination of land use change, artificial cropland drainage as well as climate change and floodplain management for fundamentally altering the flow of the river.

David Stokes is the Executive Director of Great Rivers Habitat Alliance (GRHA). He says there needs to be a regional plan put in place to help these rivers get back to full strength.

GRHA is a St. Louis based floodplain conservation group that opposes floodplain development and preserving wetlands.

Even with damage from natural causes or otherwise, the upper Mississippi’s natural resources are able to support a vibrant economy. Tourism and outdoor recreation along the river generate roughly $25 billion annually and support more than 420,000 jobs.
