SOUTHERN ILLINOIS — The U.S. Census Bureau put a focus on having residents take this year’s census online. With the ongoing pandemic, filling out the census online is allowing the every-ten-year count of residents to continue amid these trying times.

Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, Mike Beard, says the count is important to every community in Jefferson County.

The U.S. Census Bureau has cut back its door-to-door efforts to get residents counted, but the state has put millions into census participation and Mt. Vernon has created an incentive program to drive up cooperation as well.

Citizens who bring proof of completing their census into Mt. Vernon City Hall after the stay-at-home order is lifted will receive a $10 Visa gift card barring any extended quarantine orders during the COVID-19 pandemic that would interfere with the August 14th deadline. Do not take in your proof before the stay-at-home order has been lifted as City Hall will be closed and you will not be allowed in the building.
