WASHINGTON COUNTY — A Washington County grand jury has decided to not indict a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy accused of shooting his neighbor’s two dogs earlier this year and then dumping the animals’ bodies in the woods.

According to the Washington County State’s Attorney, the grand jury returned a no true bill in the case against Deputy Craig McDaniel. Jurors found there was no probable cause for the charges presented.

The information that was gathered was done during a private investigation by the Perry County Sheriff’s Department.

McDaniel was not criminally charged, however, he will remain on paid administrative leave pending the results of the internal investigation.

The alleged incident happened in January, where Jennifer Akers, a neighbor of McDaniel, alleged that he shot her two dogs after they slipped out of their collars then told her he dumped their bodies in the woods.
