City of Mt. Vernon Announces Precautions to be Taken Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

MT. VERNON — While a few actions were taken by the Mt. Vernon City Council at Monday night’s meeting, the big news came from Mayor John Lewis as he announced the city’s current actions in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The main actions city officials are taking include closing Mt. Vernon City Hall to the public for the rest of March, closing the Rolland Lewis Building to public meetings until April 1st, closing the Municipal West Building until further notice and suspending 10-A rental property inspections.

City manager Mary Ellen Bechtel says at this time, city workers will still be working at city hall.

In council business, a bid from United Rentals for a cold planer for Public Works was approved at a price of just over $14,000. The council also heard a first reading of an ordinance amending the city’s cannabis ordinances approved last July. Those changes would further specify types of cannabis businesses in the city’s zoning laws.
