WASHINGTON COUNTY, IL — A Washington County grand jury is scheduled to hear evidence starting Monday in a case accusing a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy of shooting his neighbor’s dogs and then dumping their bodies in the woods.

Jennifer Akers claims her two dogs slipped their collars the weekend of January 4 and that Deputy Craig McDaniel approached her and said he had shot the dogs and dumped them in the woods.

Washington County Sheriff Len Campbell ultimately placed McDaniel on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation conducted by the Perry County Sheriff’s Office.

The grand jury will be presented with evidence gathered in that investigation.

State’s Attorney Dan Bronke has stated that he is taking the case to the grand jury and they will decide whether or not there is probable cause for an indictment.

His office was given the results of the investigation performed by the Perry County Sheriff’s Department.
