Mt. Vernon man sentenced to 5 years on felony battery charge

MARION COUNTY, IL — A 39-year-old Mt. Vernon man was sentenced Friday in Marion County Court to 5-years in prison after he previously pleaded guilty to felony aggravated battery in a public place.

As part of the 2018 plea agreement, a charge of felony battery of a police officer was dismissed against Tyrone Briscoe.

Briscoe was accused in 2018 of battery of a Centralia police officer during an arrest for violating bail bond. He was arrested after officers tracked him down to the Industrial Tavern in Wamac.

Officers were initially dispatched to a report of a domestic disturbance on McKee Street. Briscoe was gone upon their arrival but reportedly went to the victim’s place of employment before officers located him at the tavern.

Briscoe fought with officers as they were trying to take him into custody for allegedly having contact with the victim in violation of his bail bond from an earlier case.
