Illinois’ High Gas Prices Hold State Back in Ranking of Best States for Drivers

ILLINOIS (IRN) — Of all states, a national review ranked Illinois the 13th best state for drivers, but some measures, such as the cost of gas, held the state back.

WalletHub Analyst Jill Gonzalez said most drivers across the country may think the roads in their state are the worst, but in Illinois scored well in terms of safety and access to vehicle maintenance.

“Illinois ranked 13th best, which I’m sure shocked many drivers in Illinois, but it actually did very well when it comes to safety, and when it comes to access to vehicles and maintenance,” Gonzalez said.

Looking at individual indicators, Illinois was fourth for repair shops per capita and seventh for dealers per capita.

“Believe it or not but things like traffic fatalities, traffic and discipline, are relatively low in Illinois,” Gonzalez said. “The share of uninsured drivers is a lot lower than it is in most other states.”

What held the state back was the cost of gasoline.

“So that is essentially what did Illinois in,” Gonzalez said. “Illinois has pretty high gas prices, especially when you’re comparing that to other states, even when you’re comparing that to other states in the area.”

Last summer, Illinois doubled the state’s gas tax from 19 cents a gallon to 38 cents a gallon.

“Looking at Illinois (ranked No. 13) to Wisconsin (ranked No. 14), overall in the ranking, we only see one point of a difference,” she said. “But when it comes to cost it really is night and day, especially when it comes to gas prices.”

Neighboring states like Wisconsin and Kentucky (ranked No. 12) came close to Illinois’ ranking. Iowa was No. 1 in the country. Indiana was No. 8. Missouri ranked No. 25.
