MARION COUNTY — A 48-year-old Centralia woman is free on $750 bond after she was formally charged Monday in Marion County Court with striking a Centralia police officer investigating a hit-and-run crash.

Melissa Wheritt is charged with Class 2 felony aggravated battery of a police officer for allegedly striking a Centralia police officer who had gone to her home regarding a crash on East McCord Saturday night.

There were no injuries in the crash but witness information led officers to Wheritt’s home where she reportedly refused to provide officers with information about the crash and problems were found with the vehicle’s registration.

As officers began preparing to have the vehicle towed, Wheritt allegedly slapped the officer in the face.

She was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail where she posted 10-percent of her $7,500 bail.

She’s next scheduled to appear in court February 11 for a preliminary hearing and a first appearance with her court-appointed attorney.

If convicted, a Class 2 felony can be punishable by between 3 and 7 years in prison.
