FAYETTE COUNTY — Heavy rains over the weekend have resulted in U.S. Highway 51 being closed to all traffic between Shobonier and Vandalia as the Kaskaskia River has left its banks.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, traffic is being detoured on the St. Peter blacktop for traffic heading north.

The Kaskaskia River is expected to crest Monday morning at 10 feet over flood stage. The National Weather Service says levels should begin to drop later Monday and return to below flood stage by Thursday.
