MT. VERNON — With heavy rain and possible flooding on the way, area emergency personnel want you to remember to be safe if you have to travel during this treacherous weather.

Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Kevin Sargent says no matter how shallow the water seems, don’t ever drive through a flooded roadway.

Including what has already fallen, the National Weather Service believes 3-4 inches of rain will fall across most of southern Illinois, with higher totals in localized spots.
