JEFFERSON COUNTY — 2020 is here and with the new year brings the legalization of marijuana in Illinois. Local law enforcement agencies around the state are adapting to the change to the state cannabis law.

Mt. Vernon Police Chief Trent Page says law enforcement personnel in his department have went through training classes since the law was passed last summer.

It will still be illegal for those under 21 to use marijuana, and the product must be sealed in an odorless container. Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard says because of that, K-9 dogs will continue to be used as they have been across the state.

The law allows Illinois residents to purchase and possess up to one ounce (or 30 grams) of marijuana at a time, and non-residents can have up to 15 grams.
