MARION COUNTY — A 49-year-old Woodlawn man was charged Monday in Marion County Court with possession of between 100 and 400 grams of methamphetamine as well as illegal possession of a stolen firearm.

Earl Jones Jr. was transferred to the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections following Monday’s court hearing where he was charged with a Class X felony and Class 2 felony, respectively. Jones had been sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison after he failed to appear in Jefferson County Court in September.

In that case he was convicted of Class 1 possession of narcotics near a school or park. In the Marion County case, Jones was arrested by Marion County Sheriff’s deputies following a traffic stop Saturday night in Salem.

According to reports, deputies recovered a nearly 113 grams of a substance in multiple packages in the vehicle that field tested positive as meth. A firearm that had been reported as stolen was also allegedly found in the vehicle.

Jones was a passenger in the car. The driver, 38-year-old Christal Copple, of Mt. Vernon, was charged Monday in Marion County Court with Class 3 felony possession of less than 5 grams of meth.

Her bail was set at $50,000 and a preliminary hearing and first appearance with court appointed counsel was scheduled for December 10.
