WAYNE COUNTY, IL — One person was injured in a crash involving a SUV and a box truck just before 9 Tuesday morning on I-64 in Wayne County.

According to Illinois State Police, two District 19 troopers were helping the driver of the SUV, 67-year-old Peggy S. Vaught of Fairfield, with changing her tire on the westbound shoulder of I-64 just west of milepost 101. The driver of the box truck, 41-year-old Shi Jinglin of Flushing, New York, lost control of his vehicle on the ice covered pavement as he was going west on I-64 and struck the SUV before overturning onto the grassy shoulder.

Both troopers and Peggy Vaught were outside of the SUV when the crash happened and were forced to run away from the interstate, down an embankment to avoid being struck. The trooper was not hurt nor was the passenger in the SUV identified as 71-year-old Wilbur C. Vaught of Fairfield.

Peggy Vaught was injured as a result of the crash. She was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries. Both vehicles had to be removed from the crash scene by a tow service. Jinglin was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
