MARION COUNTY — A 31-year-old Centralia man has been charged in Marion County Court with two counts of possessing a controlled substance, following his arrest Tuesday for alleged sexual assault and possession of meth.

Joseph Winkler was also wanted on an outstanding Illinois Department of Corrections warrant at the time of his arrest. He was accused of sexually assaulting a woman he was with at a party Sunday at a motel in Centralia.

The alleged victim went to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia where a rape kit was completed.

The woman reportedly told police she was raped but Winkler reportedly told them the sex was consensual.

When questioning Winkler, officers say they found he was in possession of meth and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail.

In court Tuesday he was charged with two Class 4 counts of possessing a controlled substance. His bail was set at $2,500 and he was appointed a public defender.

He’s ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim and was scheduled for a December 17 preliminary hearing.
