CENTRALIA, IL — A 32-year-old Centralia man was struck by a train early Wednesday morning near 13th and Walnut in Centralia.

According to Centralia police, the man was walking around 5:06 a.m. on the Canadian National main line when he was struck by a northbound Amtrak passenger train. Reports indicate the train was traveling approximately 35 mph at the time of impact.

Police say the area where the pedestrian was struck is not an authorized railroad crossing point and there were no trespassing signs posted.

The train’s headlights, bell and horn were all reportedly functioning at the time of the accident. The male subject was transported to the Emergency Room at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital where he was stabilized before being airlifted to St Louis University Hospital in critical condition.
