MT. VERNON — The city of Mt. Vernon has received its first zoning application for a business to sell recreational cannabis in the city.

KPG of Harrisburg, LLC submitted the application and it was filed in the Mt. Vernon City Clerk’s Office September 18th.

The possible business would be located at 800 South 45th Street, also known as Wells Bypass on Mt. Vernon’s west-side just off the interstate.

Mt. Vernon mayor John Lewis says three or four entities have reached out to the city showing interest in opening businesses selling recreational cannabis in the community. The application will go before the zoning board on October 14th.

The city of Mt. Vernon passed ordinances giving the city control of where cannabis-related businesses would be at their July 15th meeting. Other southern Illinois communities such as Marion and Murphysboro have voted to not allow recreational marijuana in their communities.

Recreational cannabis will become legal across Illinois on January 1st.
